Altona (West Virginia)

Altona is a historic farm near Charles Town, West Virginia, with an extensive set of subsidiary buildings. Its original Federal style plantation house was built in 1793 by Revolutionary War officer Abraham Davenport on land purchased from Charles Washington, and was later expanded by Davenport's son, Colonel Braxton Davenport. During the Civil War the farm served as a favored encampment, and generals Philip Sheridan and Ulysses S. Grant both used the house as a headquarters and meeting place. The farm left the Davenport family in 1906 and was repurchased in 1936, with a Sears, Roebuck house added to the property in the interim.
