Apthorp Farm

Apthorp Farm was a historic farm and estate that occupied a large block of Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City, extending from Central Park to the Hudson River between 89th and 99th Streets, from the eighteenth century into the early twentieth. Charles Ward Apthorp Jr. built its mansion himself in 1764, drawing on architectural treatises for a Palladian-style design, and the property later operated as a beer garden, inn, and picnic grounds before New York's expansion absorbed it. When litigation over the estate finally concluded in July 1910, The New York Times Magazine valued it at roughly 125 million dollars, an amount equivalent to about 3 billion dollars in 2025.
