Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial

The Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial is a Second World War military cemetery in the village of Neuville-en-Condroz, near Neupre in Belgium, roughly twenty kilometers southwest of Liege, dedicated in 1960 and administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Its cemetery and memorial were designed by the firm Reinhard, Hofmeister and Walquist, with landscaping by Richard K. Webel, and its 90.5 acres hold 5,329 American graves, including 792 marked as unidentified, laid out in the form of a Greek cross intersected by paths. A bronze figure symbolizing American youth, by the sculptor C. Paul Jennewein, stands within the memorial alongside a five-meter bronze American eagle, and mosaic panels record the insignia of the major United States units that fought in the northwest European campaigns of 1944 and 1945; granite Tables of the Missing list 462 further service members whose remains were never recovered. An interior chapel carries marble wall maps and decorative panels depicting the campaigns the cemetery commemorates.
