The Arena of Nimes is a Roman amphitheatre in Nimes, in southern France, built around AD 100, only about twenty years after the Colosseum in Rome, and it is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. It measures 133 by 101 meters, with an arena floor of 68 by 38 meters, its outer facade rises 21 meters over two storeys of 60 arcades, and it ranks among the twenty largest of the roughly 400 Roman amphitheatres known to exist; in Roman times it could hold 24,000 spectators across 34 tiers of terraces divided into four self-contained sections.
