A baradari is a pavilion or building with twelve doors, three on each of its four sides, arranged to let air pass freely through the structure. The name comes from Urdu and Hindi, bara meaning twelve and dar meaning door, and the twelve openings also give the building strong acoustic qualities that made it a favored setting for mujra dance performances, concerts and poetry recitations for the nobility, as well as a cool, well ventilated retreat during the hot summers of the Indian subcontinent, where its best known surviving examples stand today.
