Barbican Estate

The Barbican Estate is a residential complex of roughly 2,000 flats, maisonettes, and houses in the City of London, built from 1965 to 1976 on an area devastated by bombing during the Second World War. Designed by the architectural firm Chamberlin, Powell and Bon with structural engineering by Ove Arup and Partners, the estate is a prominent example of British brutalist architecture, built largely of exposed concrete and organized as slab urbanism that separates pedestrians from vehicles through elevated walkways. It was developed as upmarket rental housing aimed at City professionals rather than as social housing, and the estate is Grade II listed as a whole, incorporating the Barbican Centre, the Museum of London, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama into an integrated cultural and residential community.
