Brick House Ruins

The Brick House Ruins, also known as the Paul Hamilton House, are the standing brick walls and stuccoed ornament of a plantation house built around 1725 on Edisto Island in Charleston County, South Carolina, for the planter Paul Hamilton. The house combined American colonial building practice with French Huguenot design, using harder brick imported from Boston for its exterior walls and locally cut, long seasoned lumber inside, and its high pitched rooflines and heavy stucco decoration have been called unique among surviving buildings in the country. A fire destroyed the house's interior in 1929, leaving only the shell standing; the ruin was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and underwent stabilization work completed in 2018.
