Euryalus fortress

Fortifications and Military Architecture

The Euryalus fortress is an ancient Greek fortification on the Epipolae plateau above Syracuse, Sicily, built under the tyrant Dionysius I of Syracuse between 402 and 397 BC to guard the city's most vulnerable landward approach. It was the strongest point in Syracuse's defensive circuit, with a stone central fortress of five towers, a system of ditches, and underground galleries connecting its defensive positions, plus three large cisterns for withstanding a siege. The site was expanded during the Hellenistic and Byzantine periods and survives today as ruins with an on-site antiquarium that reopened in 2016 after damage from the 1990 earthquake.
