Tower of London

Fortifications and Military Architecture

The Tower of London, officially His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in London, founded toward the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest. Its White Tower, which gives the complex its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was initially resented as a symbol of oppression before serving as a royal residence. The Tower grew into a complex of several buildings enclosed by two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat, with major phases of expansion under kings Richard I, Henry III and Edward I in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
