The Cabildo of Buenos Aires is a Baroque public building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, completed in 1748 by the architect Andrea Bianchi. It served as the seat of the colonial town council and as government house for the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata, later housing the Royal Audience of Buenos Aires from 1661 to 1812 and, from 1810, the first home of the Public Library of Buenos Aires, while a prison occupied part of the building from 1608 until 1877. Refurbished by Pedro Benoit in 1879 and reconstructed under Mario Buschiazzo in 1940, it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1933 and opened to the public as a museum in 1938.
