Carthona, Darling Point

Carthona is a Gothic Revival mansion on a promontory at 5 Carthona Avenue in Darling Point, Sydney, Australia, built in 1841 by the surveyor and explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell, who is said to have carved many of its decorative keystones himself. The two-storey sandstone house has gabled slate roofs with castellated parapets, balconies under tall Tudor chimneys, pointed Gothic windows on the ground floor and flat arched shuttered windows above, and its roughly two-acre grounds originally held stabling for six horses along with coachhouses and servants' quarters. It is listed by the New South Wales Heritage Council as a building of local historical importance, and the Bushells Tea family, the Bushell family, has owned and lived in it since 1940 across multiple generations.
