Causeway

A causeway is a raised road or railway carried on an embankment, built to cross a body of water or low, wet ground that would otherwise block a route. Causeways have been built from earth, masonry, timber or concrete, historically formed by compacting earth in trampled layers before the process was mechanized. Beyond carrying traffic across a crossing that would otherwise be impassable, a causeway can also double as a breakwater or a dike, managing the water level on either side of it.
