Central Railway Station, Sydney

Central is a heritage listed railway station in the centre of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and Australia's largest and busiest railway station, serving as a major interchange for rail, light rail, buses and coaches. It was officially opened on August 4, 1906, with passenger services beginning the next day, and was designed by the government architect Walter Liberty Vernon working with railway engineers in a Federation Free Classical style built of Sydney sandstone at a cost of 561,000 pounds. Built on a grand scale, the station gained an 85.6 meter clock tower in 1921, and its design separated passenger, tram and vehicle traffic through elevated platforms and an extensive underground luggage network, with a prominent colonnade and porte cochere that once sheltered tram passengers. The building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
