The Charminar is a monument in Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Telangana. Constructed in 1591, it is a symbol of the city and is incorporated into the official emblem of Telangana. It remained the tallest structure in Hyderabad for 396 years, until 1987, and its long history includes a mosque that has occupied its top floor for more than 435 years. Beyond its historic and religious significance, the monument is surrounded by busy local markets and is one of Hyderabad's most visited tourist attractions, drawing large crowds during festivals such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha because it stands next to the Makkah Masjid, the main mosque of the city.
