Chatham Manor

Chatham Manor is a Georgian style mansion in Stafford County, Virginia, built on the Rappahannock River opposite Fredericksburg and completed in 1771 after roughly three years of construction. It was built by William Fitzhugh, a farmer and statesman, using enslaved labor, and served as the center of a large plantation for more than a century. The house is described as the only private residence in the United States visited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhower, and during the Civil War it briefly served as a Union Army headquarters and later as a hospital. The estate was willed to the National Park Service in 1975 and now serves as the headquarters of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
