Chennai Central, officially named Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central railway station, is one of the busiest railway stations in South India and a major rail hub for the country. Built in 1873 to relieve the older Royapuram station, it was designed by the architect George Harding and later modified in 1900 to a design by Robert Chisholm, giving the building its mixed Gothic Revival and Romanesque architecture and making it one of Chennai's most prominent landmarks. The station has been painted in maroon since it opened, and its clock tower, 136 feet high, has chimed on the quarter hour and hour since the building's earliest days; after its 2019 renaming the station gained the second longest name of any railway station in the world, after the station at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll in Wales.
