Malbork Castle

Fortifications and Military Architecture

Malbork Castle is a Brick Gothic fortress complex in Malbork, Poland, built by the Teutonic Order between 1274 and 1406 and named Marienburg after the order's patron, the Virgin Mary. The Order made it their administrative headquarters after relocating from Elbing in 1309, and at its height the castle, enclosing about 21 hectares, is considered the largest castle in the world by land area and could garrison roughly 3,000 knights. Poland's King Casimir IV purchased the castle in 1457 during the Thirteen Years' War, and it then served as a Polish royal residence for more than three centuries before falling into disrepair; restoration begun in 1962 followed extensive damage during the Second World War. UNESCO inscribed Malbork Castle as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
