The Debtors' Prison in Accomac, Virginia, is the oldest public structure in Accomack County, built in 1783 by Selby Simpson as a residence for the county jailer. The building was converted in 1824 to hold people imprisoned for debt, a use that continued until Virginia abolished imprisonment for debt in 1849. It was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, one of only a small number of surviving debtors' prisons in the United States with such recognition, and it now operates as a local history museum open by appointment.
