Dome of al-Khalili

Religious and Sacred Buildings

The Dome of al-Khalili, also called the Hebronite and known in Arabic as Qubbat al-Khalili, is a small domed building on the central platform of the Temple Mount, called Haram ash-Sharif in Arabic, in the Old City of Jerusalem. It stands north of the Dome of the Rock. The structure is built of brick, which is now tarnished with age. It dates from the early 18th century, during Ottoman rule of Palestine, and was raised in dedication to Shaykh Muhammad al-Khalili, a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) who died in 1734. As a modest commemorative dome set among the much larger monuments of the platform, it is a useful example of the small Ottoman-period shrines and memorial structures that were added around the Haram in the centuries after its principal buildings were completed.
