Edward Mooney House

The Edward Mooney House is a historic townhouse at 18 Bowery at the corner of Pell Street in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan, built between 1785 and 1789 for the wealthy butcher Edward Mooney on land confiscated from the Loyalist James De Lancey. The brick building combines Georgian and Federal elements and is considered the earliest surviving Early Federal style townhouse in New York City; it originally stood three stories plus an attic and basement before an 1807 rear addition doubled its size. Mooney lived there until about 1800, after which the building served through the 1820s as a private residence and later as a hotel, brothel and saloon. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1966 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
