The wrought iron lattice tower built by Gustave Eiffel's company as the entrance monument of the 1889 Paris Exposition, and at 300 meters the tallest structure in the world until 1930. Attacked by artists as a monstrosity while it rose, it became the symbol of Paris and the proof that exposed metal structure could be architecture.

Why this is disputed. Attribution is genuinely contested: engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier drafted the original 1884 design and architect Stephen Sauvestre added the decorative arches and pavilion; Eiffel bought the patent rights from the three of them and his company built the tower under his own name and commercial risk, which is why the tower and this credit carry his name.

The Eiffel Tower ( EYE-fəl; French: Tour Eiffel [tuʁ ɛfɛl] ) is a lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower from 1887 to 1889.

Sauvestre added decorative arches to the base of the tower, a glass pavilion to the first level, and other embellishments. The new version gained Eiffel's support: he bought the rights to the patent on the design which Koechlin, Nouguier, and Sauvestre had taken out, and the design was put on display at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in the autumn of 1884 under the company name.
