A fake building is a government-owned or public utility structure built to resemble an ordinary building, such as a house or townhouse, in order to disguise equipment or infrastructure that would otherwise stand out in a residential or non-industrial neighborhood. The camouflage is used for facilities including subway ventilation shafts, electrical substations and other city infrastructure that authorities consider visually unappealing if left exposed.
