Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station occupies a prominent corner site in central Melbourne, Australia, its current building the winning design of an 1899 architectural competition submitted by James Fawcett and Henry Ashworth under the entry name Green Light. Construction began in 1905 and the building was substantially complete by 1910, replacing an earlier station on the same site that had opened in 1854 as one of the first railway stations built in Australia. Built in a Federation-era Baroque style of sandstone, bluestone and granite beneath a copper roof, the building is anchored by a prominent domed corner tower and a row of clocks above its main entrance showing the departure times of each rail line, which gave rise to the enduring Melbourne meeting phrase to meet under the clocks. It remains one of the city's most photographed landmarks and one of the busiest suburban railway stations in the Southern Hemisphere.
