Florence American Cemetery and Memorial

The Florence American Cemetery and Memorial lies about seven and a half miles south of Florence, Italy, on the west bank of the Greve river near the Rome-Milan autoroute, and is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Its monument was designed by the New York firm McKim, Mead and White, with landscaping by Gilmore David Clarke and Michael Rapuano, and the cemetery was dedicated in 1944 on grounds framed by wooded hills. It holds 4,402 burials, primarily soldiers of the United States Fifth Army who died in the fighting that followed the capture of Rome in June 1944 and continued through the following year, alongside a memorial recording the names of 1,409 further service members listed as missing; the grounds also carry memorials and cenotaphs honoring Medal of Honor recipients and war correspondents who died covering the Italian campaign. The cemetery remains one of two American Battle Monuments Commission sites in Italy honoring the Second World War's Italian campaign.
