Gaekwad Haveli

Gaekwad Haveli is a fortified haveli on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, India, built in 1738 as the seat of the Gaekwad dynasty during Maratha rule. After the British took control in 1817 the building served in turn as military barracks, an arsenal and a railway ordnance depot, and by 1969 it had become the headquarters of the Ahmedabad police crime branch. A comprehensive restoration completed in October 2014, funded by the Gujarat Police Housing Corporation at a cost of about twenty two lakh rupees, preserved the building's light brown Dhrangadhra stone facade, converted its watch tower into a police museum and added a memorial to Vasant and Rajab, who died during the communal riots of 1946. The building now serves as the headquarters of the Gujarat Police.
