The Gateway of India is an arch monument on the waterfront of Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, completed in 1924. It was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V of the United Kingdom at Strand Road near Wellington Fountain in December 1911, ahead of his coronation as Emperor of India, the first visit to India by a reigning British monarch.
