Glass House

The Glass House is a house in New Canaan, Connecticut, designed by Philip Johnson as his own residence and completed in 1949. Built as a nearly transparent rectangular volume of glass walls on a steel frame, with a brick cylinder enclosing the bathroom as its only solid interior element, the house was among the most direct American statements of the International Style applied to a private dwelling. Johnson lived in the house for the rest of his life, gradually adding other structures across the surrounding forty-nine acre property. The estate is now preserved as a National Trust for Historic Preservation site open to visitors.
