Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait between San Francisco and Marin County, California, carrying road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic across the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Designed under chief engineer Joseph Strauss with contributions from Leon Moisseiff, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis, it opened on May 27, 1937, and its Art Deco influenced towers have made it one of the most recognized symbols of San Francisco and California, once described by a travel guide as possibly the most beautiful and certainly the most photographed bridge in the world. On opening it held the record as both the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, and it has since been named one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
