Grand National Assembly Building

The Grand National Assembly Building in the Bakanliklar district of Ankara is the seat of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the country's parliament, and is the third structure to house the body since its founding. Designed by the Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister, it has been in continuous use since 1960, replacing an earlier parliament building of 1924 to 1960 by architect Vedat Tek that was later converted into the Republic Museum. Described in its own institutional history as a modern and imposing structure, the building appeared on the reverse of the Turkish 50,000 lira banknote issued between 1989 and 1999. It sustained significant damage from three airstrikes during the attempted coup of 2016 and underwent renovation later that year.
