Gstaad Palace crowns a hill above the Swiss resort village of Gstaad, built on land purchased in 1905 by the local schoolteacher Robert Steffen, who raised the necessary capital from investors in Lausanne and Geneva to realize the project. Designed by the Dutch architect Adrien van Dorsser and opened in December 1913, the hotel combines a chateau-like turreted silhouette with the timber detailing of a traditional Swiss chalet. Its elevated position gives sweeping views over the Bernese Oberland Alps, and the hotel has long served as a focal point of Gstaad's identity as a winter and summer resort for European high society. It remains one of the most storied grand hotels of the Swiss Alps more than a century after it first opened.
