Hamad International Airport is Qatar's principal international airport, serving the capital Doha as the home base of the national carrier Qatar Airways and ranking among the busiest airports in the Middle East. It began passenger operations on April 30, 2014, with the remaining carriers relocating from the older Doha International Airport by May 27, 2014, and its terminal and concourses were designed by the American firm HOK, with Bechtel managing overall development and the contractors TAV Construction of Turkey and Taisei Corporation of Japan handling engineering and construction. The airport is built around an oasis theme, spanning about 36 square kilometers, roughly half of it on reclaimed land, with wave shaped roofs and desert plants irrigated with recycled water; its duty free hall is anchored by a seven meter bronze teddy bear sculpture by the Swiss artist Urs Fischer, and its mosque is topped by a mushroom domed aluminum and glass ceiling inspired by falling water droplets.
