A heiau is a Hawaiian temple, built in a variety of architectural styles depending on its purpose and location, ranging from simple earth terraces to elaborately constructed stone platforms. Different heiau served different ceremonial purposes, including to treat the sick, mark a first fruit or first catch, bring or stop rain, and secure success in distant voyaging, peace or war.
