The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly called the Genbaku Dome or Atomic Bomb Dome, was originally built as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. It stands within Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The building was one of the few structures left standing near the hypocenter of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, and it is deliberately preserved as a ruin, kept in its damaged state as a permanent memorial to the more than 140,000 people killed in the bombing and as a reminder of the destructive effects of nuclear warfare.
