Hotel Okura Tokyo

The Hotel Okura Tokyo opened its original main building in 1962, developed by the industrialist and art collector Kishichiro Okura ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and it became internationally celebrated for a mid-century modern interior design that fused Japanese aesthetic traditions with contemporary hotel planning. Its main lobby was especially noted for a coffered ceiling pattern echoing a traditional Japanese textile lattice motif and for a set of hexagonal pendant lanterns whose design was widely reproduced in design and architecture publications as an emblem of postwar Japanese hospitality design. The original main wing was demolished in 2015 despite an international preservation campaign and rebuilt as a new Prestige Tower, completed in 2019, whose architects deliberately recreated key elements of the original lobby's lighting and geometric detailing within the new structure. The hotel has long served as an unofficial guest house for foreign dignitaries visiting Tokyo, prized for its discretion and its proximity to the United States Embassy.
