The Hurva Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem Old City, first built in Byzantine Revival style in 1864 to the design of Ottoman architect Assad Effendi after an earlier synagogue on the site was destroyed in 1721 following a debt dispute. Rising some 24 meters to the peak of its large central dome, supported on four corner pilasters, the building was itself destroyed during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and stood as a ruin marked by a commemorative arch after 1977. It was rebuilt in its original nineteenth century style and rededicated in 2010.
