Jerdone Castle

Jerdone Castle is a plantation near Bumpass in Louisa County, Virginia, whose oldest section was built around 1742 by Francis Jerdone and whose main residence was substantially expanded in 1853 for his descendant Sarah Jerdone Coleman and her husband, General Clayton G. Coleman. The house displays Italianate features including a bracketed cornice and a cupola, and the estate, originally 1,100 acres, now covers 175 acres after part of it was submerged beneath Lake Anna. A Virginia Historic Landmark added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, it was visited overnight by George Washington in 1791 and later spent childhood summers hosting novelist Ellen Glasgow, who credited the place with inspiring her writing.
