John Roseberry Homestead

The John Roseberry Homestead, also known as the Walter Gess House, is a classic Georgian house at 540 Warren Street in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey, built of rough-cut quarry stone between 1765 and 1783 and possibly the oldest standing building in the town. John Roseberry Sr., one of the original settlers of Phillipsburg, is believed to have built or occupied the two-story, five-bay house, which has a center-hall plan, an attached stone kitchen and multiple fireplaces and chimneys, including a large cooking fireplace whose brick oven has since been removed. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1973, and to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places on October 18, 1972, though the building has since deteriorated significantly, with a sound exterior but a compromised interior, and has been boarded up for at least fifteen years.
