Kansai International Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 of Kansai International Airport, on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, was designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Noriaki Okabe and opened along with the airport on September 4, 1994, as Japan's first airport built to operate around the clock. Its defining feature is an airfoil shaped roof running the length of the terminal, engineered to promote natural air circulation through giant ducts built into the curve of the structure itself. At 1.7 kilometres from end to end, it was, as of 2018, the longest airport terminal building in the world, and travelers move along its length aboard an automated people mover called the Wing Shuttle. Because the artificial island beneath it continues to subside, the terminal's supporting columns were engineered to be adjustable, and the design earned the American Society of Civil Engineers' Civil Engineering Monument of the Millennium award in 2001.
