Kippax Plantation

Kippax Plantation was a colonial era estate on the south bank of the Appomattox River in what is now Hopewell, Virginia. It was the home of Colonel Robert Bolling, who married Jane Rolfe, granddaughter of Pocahontas and John Rolfe; their son John Bolling was born there in 1676, and Jane and Robert are believed to have been buried on the property. The original house no longer stands, but archaeologist Donald W. Linebaugh located its remains in 2002, and subsequent excavations by researchers from the University of Kentucky and William and Mary have uncovered at least four structures spanning the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, documenting European, Native American, and enslaved African American life on the site. The roughly 9 acre property was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and is now protected by the Archaeological Conservancy.
