Kirkwood (Eutaw, Alabama)

Kirkwood is a historic plantation house at 111 Kirkwood Drive in Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama, whose construction began in 1858 under Foster M. Kirksey but was interrupted by the Civil War, leaving some features unfinished. The wood-framed two-story house blends Greek Revival and Italianate design, with a substantial cupola, ornamental wooden roof-eave brackets and a wraparound Carolina-type portico with Ionic columns; the Historic American Buildings Survey documented it in 1934, and photographer Carol M. Highsmith photographed it again in 2010. Owners Roy and Mary Swayze completed the unfinished balcony railings and cupola work of the house in the 1970s, earning an Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1982, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1976, for its architectural significance.
