Kruščica concentration camp

Kruscica was a concentration camp established and run by the fascist Ustase movement of the Independent State of Croatia near the town of Vitez, operating between August and October 1941 during World War II. Ordered into being by Vjekoslav Luburic, head of the state system of concentration camps, it held Jewish and Serb women, children and men transported from Gospic and Sarajevo in crowded, unfinished barracks with poor sanitation, and prisoners were fed only a daily ladle of bean soup. As many as 5,000 people passed through the camp and up to 3,000 died there before it was dissolved and its remaining prisoners deported to camps including Jasenovac and Loborgrad. The site later became a memorial with a museum and monument, and in 2014 it was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
