Liendo Plantation

Liendo Plantation is a historic cotton plantation in Waller County, Texas, near Hempstead, originally granted to Jose Justo Liendo in 1828 and purchased in 1841 by Leonard Waller Groce, who developed it into a working cotton operation and built the present Greek Revival house in 1853. During the Civil War the property served as Camp Groce, a Confederate training camp that later held Union prisoners of war. In 1873 the plantation was purchased by the German American sculptor Elisabet Ney and the Scottish American physician Edmund Montgomery. The nine acre historic core of the plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1971 and was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964.
