The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also called the Pharos of Alexandria, was a tower built on the island of Pharos in the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt, during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century BC. Standing an estimated 100 meters or more in height, it was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and remained one of the tallest human made structures for centuries, with a dedication naming the architect Sostratus of Cnidus, though the attribution is disputed. Damaged repeatedly by earthquakes between the tenth and fourteenth centuries, it fell into ruin, and its remaining stones were used to build the Citadel of Qaitbay in 1480.
