Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial is a Second World War military cemetery in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, in the Philippines, established in 1948 and designed by the architect Gardner A. Dailey. With 17,206 graves it holds the largest number of American war dead of any cemetery maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, alongside a smaller number of Philippine war dead, arranged across eleven circular plots beneath headstones cut from Lasa marble. Its memorial building houses twenty-five large mosaic maps set across four rooms, recording the campaigns of United States forces across the Pacific, China, India and Burma theaters of the war, and a mahogany-lined central mall leads visitors from the plaza and fountain at the cemetery's entrance toward the burial grounds beyond. The cemetery remains the largest of its kind maintained by the United States outside the country's own borders.
