Mansfield Plantation

Mansfield Plantation is a preserved antebellum rice plantation established in 1718 on the banks of the Black River in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Relying on tidal irrigation and enslaved labor, the estate was once among the largest rice producers in the United States, supplying the prized Carolina Gold variety to European markets. The property, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, still preserves its main house together with a schoolhouse, chapel, guest house and Georgetown County's only surviving winnowing barn, and restoration of its slave village began in 2005.
