Marietta (Glenn Dale, Maryland)

Marietta is a two and a half story brick house in the Federal style, built in 1812 to 1813 in a traditional I-house plan, in Glenn Dale, Prince George's County, Maryland. Constructed under the direction of Gabriel Duvall, a justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1811 to 1835, the house remained with his heirs until 1902 and today operates as a museum documenting the lives of the free and enslaved people who lived and worked there, with enslaved populations recorded between nine and forty individuals a year from 1812 to 1865. The 24 acre property, part of an original 690 acre tobacco plantation, is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, and includes outbuildings, a cemetery, and a law office.
