Meyer May House

The Meyer May House stands in Grand Rapids, Michigan, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the clothing retailer Meyer S. May and completed in 1909, near the end of the period in which Wright developed his Prairie style of low, horizontally emphasized houses organized around a central hearth. The house preserves Wright's characteristic Prairie style features, including art glass windows, built-in furniture and cantilevered rooflines, in an unusually complete and well documented form. In the 1980s the Steelcase office furniture company, based in Grand Rapids, undertook an extensive restoration of the house in consultation with Wright scholars, reproducing lost furnishings, textiles and art glass from Wright's original drawings and photographs to return the interior to a condition close to its 1909 appearance. That restoration is widely regarded as one of the most thorough and historically careful restorations of any Wright residence, and the house has since been open to public tours as a house museum operated by Steelcase.
