Middleburg Plantation

Middleburg Plantation is a colonial-era plantation on the Cooper River about two miles southwest of Huger in Berkeley County, South Carolina, whose main house was built in 1697 by French Huguenot refugee Benjamin Simons and whose grounds were formally established as a plantation in 1699. Measuring roughly 64 by 20 feet with a hip roof, three rooms per floor and single-story porches along both long sides, the house is probably the oldest standing wood-frame building in South Carolina, and an ell was added in the late eighteenth century alongside a nineteenth-century carriage house and a brick commissary with a slave jail. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, the property remained in the hands of Simons' descendants at the time of its listing.
