Middleton Place is a plantation on the Ashley River in Dorchester County, South Carolina, about fifteen miles northwest of Charleston, built in phases between roughly 1738 and 1755 and continuing through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is home to what is described as America's oldest landscaped gardens. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated a National Historic Landmark District, and it is preserved today as a museum of about 110 acres, a remnant of an original holding of some 7,000 acres, operated by the Middleton Place Foundation.
