Milano Centrale

Milano Centrale is Milan's principal railway station, designed by the architect Ulisse Stacchini and inaugurated in 1931 to replace an earlier nineteenth-century station of the same name. Its monumental facade and interior combine Liberty-style, or Italian Art Nouveau, detailing with the heavier Novecento classicism favored during the Fascist era, including large sculptural reliefs and a vast iron and glass train shed roof spanning the platforms. Among the largest railway stations in Europe by both floor area and passenger volume, it has remained in continuous use as a major hub for national and international rail services since its opening.
